Dirty Power – FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are GS units?

GS (Graham-Stetzer) units are a measure of the average magnitude of the voltage surge (i.e. the rate of change of the voltage with time, or dV/dt) at the electrical socket.

How do I know if I have dirty power?

Most homes with electricity (especially those with solar systems) have some level of dirty power. The only way to know if you have high levels of dirty power is to use a Stetzerizer GS meter and measure it.

Do I need to hire an electrician to install Stetzerizer filters?

No. Stetzerizer filters are designed so that anyone can properly install them. Simply plug the filters into an electrical outlet or power strip and turn on the power. See video below.

How many Stetzer filters will I need for my home?

Every home is different. The only way to know is to measure the level of microsurges with a Stetzer GS meter, install filters and measure the levels again. Repeat the process until all values are under 50 on the GS meter.

As a general guide, in Australia we have found most homes need between 5 and 10.

This video shows how we use the Stetzerizer GS meter to work out the number of filters needed for a home.

How can I tell if a Stetzerizer filter is working?

The best way to know is to use the Stetzerizer GS meter to measure the levels before and after the filter is installed.

The filters also have a light which will illuminate when on.

I plugged in a Stetzerizer filter and it started humming. Should it do this?

No. If a Stetzerizer filter hums it is a good indication that there not enough filters in the electrical circuit.  To resolve this problem simply plug in more filters. See video above.  The number needed will vary from home to home. It may take many filters to clean up your home. One or two filters simply cannot do the work of 10 or 12.

What is the lifespan of a Stetzerizer filter?

Stetzerizer filters are not like your car oil filter that fills up and needs to be replaced. They are an electric component and if you look after them they should last a lifetime.

Can I use my filters in other countries?

The Australian Stetzierzer filter is compatible with New Zealand. They can be used in other countries that have 240v but you will need an appropriate plug adapter.

Can I change the fuse in the filter?

Yes, the Stetzerizer filters come with replaceable fuses. Please get in touch if you need one.

Watch this video for instructions on how to change the fuse.
